"Innovative Bridges Around the World" - Dr. Jiri Strasky
Dr. Jiri Strasky is professor of concrete structures at the Technical University of Brno, Czech Republic, and principal of the firm Strasky, Husty and Partners which specializes in bridge design and construction engineering. The firm has offices in the Czech Republic and California. Dr. Strasky is renowned for his innovative bridge designs around the world. He has received numerous awards for his work. Some of Dr. Strasky's notable achievements are the Wisconsin Avenue Viaduct in Milwaukee, WI, the Stress Ribbon Bridge in Redding, CA, the Suspension Bridge in Eugene, CA, the Cable-Stayed Bridge across the Elbe River, Czech Republic and the $1 billion Oakland Bay Bridge currently under design by T.Y. Lin International.

Dr. Strasky's presentation showed examples of bridge around the world where challenging structural and construction constraints were converted to opportunities showcasing the ingenuity of merging artistic beauty and structural efficiency. Examples included cable-stayed bridges, arch bridges and extra-dosed bridges. Structural modeling, construction issues and costs were also summarized.

 

"Unique Bridge Construction Methods" - Mr. David Sinsheimer
Mr. David Sinsheimer is the Managing Senior Design Engineer with the Kiewit Engineering Company in Omaha. Mr. Sinsheimer's presentation focused on the engineering planning required to erect modern structures. An outline of the work involved at the construction phase of a project before machinery is mobilized was discussed in addition to the concerns for the environmental impact to the landscape, which can limit or completely prohibit equipment access.
