Innovative
Bridges Around the World & Unique Bridge Construction Methods
"Innovative Bridges Around the World" - Dr. Jiri Strasky
Dr. Jiri Strasky is professor of concrete structures at the Technical
University of Brno, Czech Republic, and principal of the firm Strasky,
Husty and Partners which specializes in bridge design and construction
engineering. The firm has offices in the Czech Republic and California.
Dr. Strasky is renowned for his innovative bridge designs around
the world. He has received numerous awards for his work. Some of
Dr. Strasky's notable achievements are the Wisconsin Avenue Viaduct
in Milwaukee, WI, the Stress Ribbon Bridge in Redding, CA, the Suspension
Bridge in Eugene, CA, the Cable-Stayed Bridge across the Elbe River,
Czech Republic and the $1 billion Oakland Bay Bridge currently under
design by T.Y. Lin International.
Dr. Strasky's presentation showed examples of bridge around the
world where challenging structural and construction constraints
were converted to opportunities showcasing the ingenuity of merging
artistic beauty and structural efficiency. Examples included cable-stayed
bridges, arch bridges and extra-dosed bridges. Structural modeling,
construction issues and costs were also summarized.
"Unique
Bridge Construction Methods" - Mr. David Sinsheimer
Mr. David Sinsheimer is the Managing Senior Design Engineer with
the Kiewit Engineering Company in Omaha. Mr. Sinsheimer's presentation
focused on the engineering planning required to erect modern structures.
An outline of the work involved at the construction phase of a project
before machinery is mobilized was discussed in addition to the concerns
for the environmental impact to the landscape, which can limit or
completely prohibit equipment access.
