Associate Professor of Civil Engineering
Research Investigator, Intelligent Systems Center
Research Investigator, Materials Research Graduate Center
University of Missouri-Rolla

Education

  • B.S., Civil Engineering, University of Sciences and Technology of Oran, Algeria, 1983
  • M.S., Civil/Structural Engineering, University of Houston, 1986
  • Ph.D., Civil/Structural Engineering, University of Houston, 1991

Expertise

Dr. Belarbi is actively engaged in a broad spectrum of Structural Engineering research areas. His primary research contributions deal with the analytical and experimental investigation of reinforced concrete beams, shear panels, torsional members, and the constitutive modeling of reinforced and prestressed concrete as well as the analysis and design of these structures. Since 1991, his research has also focused on seismic and wind structural performance of building envelopes, including experimental structural investigation of glass curtain wall systems employed in low- and high-rise buildings. In recent years, he expanded his research to smart structures and smart sensors as applied to civil infrastructures. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator in several research projects and has published over 30 technical papers. He is also active on several technical, educational and professional society committees. This year he is serving as the president of the American Concrete Institute, Missouri-Chapter.

While a research assistant at the University of Houston, Dr. Belarbi served as a team leader who conceptualized, designed, and constructed the 3/4-million U.S. dollar Universal Panel Tester used to test reinforced concrete panel and shell elements as well as other sophisticated structures. This test facility is unique in the United States.

As a teacher, he has taught undergraduate courses in vector mechanics, structural analysis, and reinforced concrete design as well as graduate courses in advanced structural theory, matrix methods of structural analysis, prestressed concrete design, advanced concrete structures, timber and wood design, and advanced behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete. He also supervises individual research and thesis work of several undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students. In addition to his professional activites, Dr. Belarbi is fluent in English, French and Arabic.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Belarbi was the recipient of the 1995 Outstanding Paper Award by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (Earthquake Spectra Journal). He was also the recipient of three Faculty Excellence Awards, (1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98) for his excellence in research, teaching and service contributions to UMR. In Summer 1997, Dr. Belarbi was selected by his peers in the Department of Civil Engineering to receive the Overall Outstanding Faculty Award.

Dr. Belarbi's dedication to teaching earned him four Outstanding Teaching Awards; at the University of Houston (1991) and at the University of Missouri-Rolla (1995, 1996, and 1997), and in 1996 he was selected by Sigma Chi as the outstanding faculty member of the year. Dr. Belarbi is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers.
